Travel in the UK is nearing pre-pandemic volumes heading into summer. Hotel occupancy has steadily increased from a low of 37% occupancy in January 2022, finishing nearly on par with 2019 performance for May 2022 at 63% occupancy. And with 39% of hotel reservations still being made within the 0-7 day booking window, there is a strong possibility that this summer could outperform the prior three years.
Also notable is the high transient average daily rate (ADR) achieved by hoteliers, reaching a high of $272 per room in July, versus $219 for the same month in 2019.
Along with the price and demand for hotels, car rentals are also proving popular. Booking volumes are up 524% for the months of June, July, and August 2022 versus 2021, with average daily rates double the price of last year. The cost may be impacting car rental length, down slightly from 8 days on average in 2021, to 7 days this year.
